BPM stands for Beats Per Minute — literally how many beats occur in 60 seconds. It's the metronome of a track, and it controls the physical feel of music more than any other single element. A 75 BPM beat moves slowly and heavily; a 128 BPM track pushes people onto the dance floor. The same chord progression, same melody, same vocal sample — at 80 BPM it sounds brooding, at 140 BPM it sounds euphoric.
Different genres cluster around specific BPM ranges. Knowing this tells you whether a beat you found will feel native to your style, or whether you'll be fighting the tempo the whole session.

One important nuance: Trap is often produced at 65–80 BPM but felt at double that tempo. Producers sometimes work at 140–160 BPM and call it "Trap tempo" — it depends on whether the kick is on the half or full grid. Always listen, don't just read the number.
What Musical Key Means — Major vs Minor
A musical key is the tonal home base of a track — the note and scale that all the other notes resolve around. It determines the emotional flavour more than almost any other decision in production.
There are two types of keys: major and minor. Major keys sound bright, open, and uplifting — think of a pop anthem or a feel-good summer record. Minor keys sound darker, more emotional, and introspective — most Hip-Hop, R&B, and Trap works in minor keys. The same melody transposed from major to minor feels like a completely different song.

Matching a vocal to a beat. If you recorded a vocal hook a cappella (or have a reference vocal in a known key), find its Camelot position and browse beats in the same number or adjacent positions. An A minor vocal (8A) pairs naturally with beats in 8A, 8B (C major), 7A (D minor), or 9A (E minor).
Layering two beats or loops. Stacking a chord loop on top of an existing beat — or layering two sample packs — only works cleanly if the keys are compatible. The Camelot system tells you in two seconds whether they'll work together or fight each other.
