You found the perfect beat, recorded your vocals, and bounced the file — then played it back and felt something was off. The vocals are there but they're not sitting right. Everything sounds a bit muddy, or the beat is overwhelming your voice, or the whole thing lacks the professional polish of the records you're referencing. This is one of the most common points where independent artists get stuck, and it almost always comes down to the same seven problems.
None of these fixes require a commercial mixing studio. They work in GarageBand, FL Studio, Logic, Pro Tools, or any DAW with basic EQ and compression plugins.
The Mix Chain — Process in This Order
Before diving into each fix, the order matters. Applying compression before EQ means you're compressing frequencies you may then cut — wasted processing. Work through these steps in sequence:
Fix 1 — Cut the Low End on Your Vocal (High-Pass Filter)
Every vocal recording picks up low-frequency rumble — room resonance, mic stand vibration, HVAC noise, breath plosives. None of that is music. A high-pass filter set between 80 Hz and 120 Hz removes it all instantly, cleaning up the bottom of your mix without touching the tonal quality of your voice.
The exact cutoff depends on the voice. A deeper male voice might start at 80 Hz; a higher female vocal can often be cut at 120 Hz or above. The rule: roll off until you hear the warmth start to thin, then back off slightly.
Fix 2 — Carve Space in the Beat for Your Vocal (200–400 Hz Notch)
When a produced beat collides with a vocal, the muddiest collision zone is almost always between 200 Hz and 400 Hz. This is where the body of most instruments lives — piano chords, guitar rhythm, synth pads — and it's also where the warmth of a vocal sits. When both fight for the same space, everything sounds thick and undefined.
The fix: apply a narrow bell cut of −3 to −5 dB on the instrumental track in the 250–350 Hz range. You're not removing the beat's low-mids entirely; you're making a small pocket for your vocal to breathe through. The beat will actually sound fuller after this because it's no longer competing.
Fix 3 — Add Presence to the Vocal (2–5 kHz Boost)
The presence region (2–5 kHz) is where intelligibility lives — where consonants, articulation, and the "cut" of a vocal come from. A gentle shelf or bell boost of +2 to +3 dB in this range makes a vocal step forward in the mix without raising its overall volume. It's the difference between a vocal that sits in the beat and one that rides on top of it.
Use a wide Q so the boost sounds natural. A narrow boost in this range can introduce an edgy, honky quality that's easy to over-do.

Fix 4 — Compress to Control Dynamics
Vocals are dynamically inconsistent by nature — the chorus hits harder than the verse, certain words are louder than others, the end of phrases trails off. Compression evens all of this out so every word sits at a consistent level in the mix.
A starting point that works across most vocal styles: ratio 3:1 to 4:1, attack 10–25 ms (slow enough to let the initial transient of each word through), release 60–120 ms (fast enough to breathe between words), and gain reduction of about −4 to −6 dB on the loudest passages. Aim for an average of around −3 dB of gain reduction — you want the compressor working consistently, not clamping down in spikes.
Fix 5 — De-Ess the Harshness (6–10 kHz)
Sibilance — the sharp, hissing quality of "s," "sh," and "t" sounds — is exaggerated by microphones and presence boosts. Left unchecked, it fatigues listeners and sounds amateurish even on an otherwise good mix. A de-esser is a frequency-specific compressor that only activates when sibilant energy exceeds a threshold in the 6–10 kHz range.
Set the de-esser to catch the worst offenders without removing the natural air from your voice. If you don't have a de-esser plugin, a narrow dynamic EQ set to cut around 7–8 kHz achieves the same result.
Fix 6 — Use Reverb and Delay as a Pair
Most amateur mixes add reverb alone — and end up with a vocal that sounds distant and washed out. The professional approach uses reverb and delay together as complementary tools. Delay (a short slapback or eighth-note throw) places the vocal in space and gives it dimension without pushing it back. Reverb then adds tail and atmosphere around the delay.
Keep reverb subtle on lead vocals — a short plate or room with a decay under 1.5 seconds. Run both through a send/return channel so you can adjust the wet signal independently from the dry vocal. A good starting wet level for the reverb return is around −18 to −15 dB relative to the dry signal.
Fix 7 — Mono Check Before You Bounce
Most music is listened to through phones, earbuds, Bluetooth speakers, and car systems — all of which collapse stereo signals to mono, or close to it. Anything in your mix that relies on wide stereo separation (panned reverb tails, wide synth layers) can disappear or phase-cancel in mono.
Before bouncing your final mix, fold everything to mono in your DAW and listen. Your vocal should still be front and centre. The beat should still have body. If something important vanishes or sounds wrong in mono, fix it in stereo first — then re-check.
These seven fixes won't replace a professional mix engineer, but they will close the gap between a rough session export and something that sounds intentional and polished. Apply them in order, trust your ears, and reference against tracks you admire at every step.
